Manila, Philippines – After two heartstopping games, the Fighting Maroons came home with a win at 72-69 against the Blue Eagles, stealing the championship title in a buzzer beater. Fighting Maroons guard Joel Cagulangan makes the winning three-point shot, giving University of the Philippines the win.
“We are proud to be a staunch supporter of the UP Men’s Basketball Team,” said Dennis Anthony Uy, CEO and Co-Founder of Converge ICT Solutions, Inc. “Their tenacity and commitment to the game is truly inspiring. We know that with this win, they will continue to invigorate the Filipino spirit of sportsmanship.” Converge began sponsoring the collegiate team in 2020.
In a historic game last Sunday, May 8, the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons defeated the Ateneo Blue Eagles in game one of the finals of UAAP’s 84th season. After an intense first game, the Maroons ended 81-74 in overtime, proving to be a great obstacle to the Blue Eagles in this year’s finals. They lost the second game last Wednesday by three points at 69-66, giving the Blue Eagles a chance to catch up.
The last time the UP Maroons won a UAAP Championship in Men’s Basketball was 36 years ago in the 49th season (1986-187), although they have placed in the Final Four 5 times in the past two decades. This is the University’s first championship win since 1986.
